    A Canadian Armed Forces commander deployed in Latvia has been stripped of his role after being formally charged under Canada’s military justice system, prompting a swift command transition to maintain operational stability.

    The charge originates from a May 2025 investigation by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service into allegations related to compensation and benefits.

    Colonel James Smith has been relieved of his duties as Commander of Task Force Latvia, the head of the Canadian Joint Operations Command said Tuesday(April 7), while proceedings in the case continue. According to CTV News website, Colonel James Smith will be reassigned to duties in Canada while the matter remains unresolved. The Canadian Armed Forces has appointed Lieutenant-Colonel Joel Maley to serve as interim commander of Task Force Latvia.


    Lt.-Gen. Steve Boivin said, “As publicly confirmed by the Canadian Forces Provost Marshal on March 31, 2026, Colonel James Smith has been charged with one count under Section 129 of the National Defence Act, Neglect to the Prejudice of Good Order and Discipline.”

    Lieutenant-General Steve Boivin said the removal of Colonel James Smith followed a review of all relevant considerations and was taken with full attention to procedural fairness.

    “This is a decision made to ensure continuity of leadership and the effective conduct of operations while the charge against Colonel Smith proceeds through the military justice system,” he said.

    According to CTV News website, Colonel James Smith will be reassigned to duties in Canada while the matter remains unresolved.

    Last week, the Canadian Forces Provost Marshal first announced the charge against Colonel James Smith.

    The Canadian Armed Forces said in a March 31 statement that Colonel James Smith faces one count under the National Defence Act for neglect to the prejudice of good order and discipline.

    The charge originates from a May 2025 investigation by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service into allegations related to compensation and benefits.
