Asin and Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma’s approach to raising daughter Arin: No TV or mobile phones at home, books for older classes and 12 languages, including Chinese and Korean
While most children are introduced to screens at an early age, Asin Thottumkal and Rahul Sharma have taken a different route with their eight-year-old daughter, Arin Rayn Sharma. The couple have chosen to raise her without television or mobile phones, filling their home with books instead. Micromax co-founder Rahul revealed that their collection already includes books for Classes 8 and 9, even though Arin is still in Class 2.

Arin can speak around 12 languages, says Rahul Sharma

Rahul also shared an interesting detail about Arin’s linguistic abilities, revealing that the eight-year-old can understand and speak around 12 languages. These include Korean, Japanese, Thai and Chinese, he said.

“I am finding it difficult to speak even two languages. We are stuck with English and Hindi,” Rahul said during the interview.

Why the couple have kept television and mobile phones away from their daughter

Rahul said books have replaced screens in their household, with the couple choosing not to introduce television or mobile phones to Arin so far.

“We have not given Arin any screens thus far. Therefore, no TVs or mobile phones. We only have books at home. We probably have more books at home than Arin has at her school,” he said.

The family's book collection goes well beyond Arin's current grade. While she is in Class 2, her parents have already stocked books for Classes 8 and 9. Rahul joked about how far ahead their collection goes, saying, “Let her appear for the Class 10 board exam as well. What difference does it make?”

He added that the approach was largely Asin's contribution, crediting his wife for the reading-focused environment they have created for their daughter.

    Where is Asin now

Asin started her career with advertisements before making her acting debut in the Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka in 2001. She went on to gain recognition in Telugu cinema with Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi (2003), starring opposite Ravi Teja.

She entered Bollywood with Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini (2008), which became a major box-office hit and the first Hindi film to cross ₹100 crore in net collections in India. Asin later featured in films such as London Dreams (2009), Ready (2011), Housefull 2, Khiladi 786 and Bol Bachchan (all 2012).

Her final film appearance was in All Is Well (2015), alongside Abhishek Bachchan. A year later, she married Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma and subsequently stepped away from the film industry.

    Asin and Rahul's luxury home

An Economic Times report from 2014 described Asin and Rahul Sharma’s residence as a three-acre farmhouse in Mehrauli, South Delhi, with landscaped gardens and sprawling outdoor spaces. The property offers a setting for intimate gatherings and family celebrations. After their wedding ceremonies in 2016, the couple reportedly held a private celebration for their guests.
