ReutersBitcoin price today: BTC USD rebounds to $78,000 after US midterm election sell-off - key levels traders must watch now
The election has left investors weighing two competing possibilities, Democrats could push for tighter oversight of digital assets, but divided control between Congress and the White House could also make sweeping policy changes harder to achieve.
Why the US midterm results rattled Bitcoin (BTC USD) investors
The prospect of tougher crypto regulation initially weighed on Bitcoin and other major digital assets, including Ethereum. Investors are concerned that Democratic control of Congress could delay legislation backed by the industry and increase scrutiny of crypto companies. The Clarity Act, considered important to the sector, is already stalled in the Senate. Rachael Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets, said “With the Clarity Act already stalled in the Senate, a change in committee control would most likely mean renegotiation rather than a quick revival, and markets had largely priced that in,” as quoted by Bloomberg.
The election also delivered a blow to the crypto industry's political efforts. Ohio Senator Jon Husted lost to former Senator Sherrod Brown after receiving substantial support from a PAC affiliated with Fairshake, which has spent heavily on candidates viewed as friendly to the industry.
Still, the long-term effect of the election on crypto prices is far from clear. Political gridlock could limit fiscal stimulus and weigh on speculative assets, while lower Treasury yields could eventually offer support by easing financial conditions.

Bitcoin's recovery comes as market pressure persists
Bitcoin's rebound followed a wider turnaround in equities, suggesting investors were reassessing the implications of the election rather than simply extending their initial reaction.Markus Thielen, head of 10x Research, pointed to hopes that peace negotiations could resume following voter opposition to the war with Iran, saying “Bitcoin is rallying back as Trump has indicated that he will respect the election results and, as US voters have voted against the war, there is now hope that peace negotiations will resume. Bitcoin is now oversold and should rally,” as quoted by Bloomberg.
Crypto-linked stocks also traded higher before the market opened. Strategy gained 2.3%, Coinbase rose 1.5% and Circle Internet Group advanced 1.2%.
The recovery, however, has not undone Bitcoin's recent losses. Nearly $1.2 billion flowed out of US-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds from Friday through Tuesday. Options markets also continued to show demand for downside protection, indicating that some traders remained cautious despite the price bounce.
Santiment sees a possible contrarian signal in bearish sentiment
Investor mood has deteriorated alongside Bitcoin's price. Santiment said bullish comments about the cryptocurrency outnumbered bearish ones by roughly 1.8 to 1 on October 20. Following the price decline and Binance hack, that ratio fell to approximately 0.37.The initial election results brought another wave of bearish sentiment, partly because many individual investors viewed Republicans as more supportive of the crypto industry.
Santiment cautioned, however, that widespread pessimism does not automatically mean prices will keep falling. In some cases, negative sentiment can precede a reversal, creating the possibility of a “buy the rumor, sell the fact” pattern once election results are settled, as per a Bitcoinsistemi report.
The firm identified a return above $79,000 as a signal that Bitcoin could be moving against the prevailing negative outlook. That remains a level to watch, rather than confirmation that a sustained recovery is underway.
Bitcoin price (BTC USD) levels to watch if selling resumes
Market analyst Murphy has outlined several levels that could come into focus if Bitcoin pulls back again. His analysis draws on price movements between January and September 2023 and the Short-Term Holder Realized Price (STH-RP), a measure used in his assessment of market conditions.Murphy said Bitcoin had previously encountered resistance above the STH-RP line's one-standard-deviation level before pulling back.
Based on the indicators cited in his analysis, $75,700 could be retested if selling pressure returns. A further decline could bring $72,300 into focus, with $68,900 another level to watch.
These are potential scenarios identified by the analyst, not confirmed price targets.
Bitcoin's rebound has given traders a break from the latest sell-off, but the market still faces several competing pressures. The election has led to uncertainty over crypto policy, while ETF outflows and the fallout from the Binance hack continue to weigh on sentiment. Whether the recovery holds will depend on how those concerns develop in the days ahead.
