Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday ordered the takeover of management committees of 58 schools linked to the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its Falah-e-Aam Trust.

Officials said the action followed adverse intelligence reports and the expiry of the schools' management tenure.

The School Education Department invoked Ministry of Home Affairs notifications declaring JeI an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The organisation was banned in 2019 for five years, with the ban extended for another five years in 2024.

"These 58 functional schools were found to be directly or indirectly affiliated with the banned outfit or its trust," an official said. Deputy commissioners have been directed to take control of the schools and propose fresh, verified committees to ensure students' academic interests remain unaffected.

Authorities said the move is aimed at maintaining quality education in line with National Education Policy (NEP) norms without disruption.

Earlier, in 2025, the J&K government had taken over management of 215 schools found affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami/Falah-e-Aam Trust across the Union Territory.
