Jonathan Alan Lefman, the Massachusetts man who was accused of making “repeated sexual contact” with a 17-year-old girl on a JetBlue flight in 2024 convicted of abusive sexual contact.
The 48-year-old father of four was convicted of “one count of abusive sexual contact while in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States,” the US Attorney’s Office, District of Massachusetts, said in a press release on Thursday, Oct. 22.
Lefman, who is from Newton, a wealthy suburb of Boston, was arrested in February last year and indicted by a federal grand jury a few weeks later in March. Now, he faces up to two years in prison, ‘five years to a lifetime of supervised release,’ and a fine that could go up to $250,000, according to Thursday’s release. He is scheduled for sentencing on January 12, next year.
On 30th August in 2024, Lefman was on the JetBlue flight from Puerto Rico’s San Juan to Boston with his family, which included his wife and four children. As per the Attorney’s office, while on the flight, during waiting to deplane in Boston, he engaged in abusive sexual contact with the minor victim on “multiple occasions.”
The press release further detailed the incident, accompanying some photographs, “specifically, Lefman worked his hand in between the area between the back and bottom of the seat directly in front of him, where the minor victim was seated, and touched the minor victim’s buttocks without her permission.”
“The defendant repeatedly sexually abused a minor who was simply trying to travel safely aboard a commercial flight,” United States Attorney Leah B. Foley said.
On one occasion, the minor victim caught on when she saw Lefman’s reflection in the seatback monitor in front of her. She recorded Lefman’s fingers with her cell phone, “protruding” from the bottom back of her seat.
After deplaning, an adult female family member sitting in a different row told the whole incident to a JetBlue supervisor and even confronted Lefman, per the US Attorney’s Office. She also showed the video to the accused from the 17-year-old’s phone.
“This verdict delivers justice for a young teen who showed remarkable courage following an appalling act. No one should ever be subjected to such harmful and predatory conduct - least of all in a confined, public space where she was entitled to feel safe,” Ted E. Docks, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division, said in the release.
