Trump shares new MAGA-style ‘Veto’ hat as Democrats take control of both House and Senate after midterm elections, days after threatening to become ‘Mr Veto’

    Synopsis

Donald Trump shared a photo of a red 'Veto' hat on Truth Social amid the midterm elections. Media projections indicate that Democrats may gain control of both House and Senate. Trump indicated he would become 'Mr. Veto' if Republicans lost control over Congress and mentioned negotiations may occur later. The veto is a significant power for a president, allowing rejection of bills passed by Congress.

US President Donald Trump posted the picture of a Make America Great Again-style hat on his social media platform Truth Social. The post comes amid a series of posts as several media networks, including CNN and NBC have projected that Democrats will gain control of both the House and the Senate.

Just two days before the midterm elections Trump had threatened he would become ‘Mr. Veto’ if the Republicans lost their control over the Congress. “Well, if that happens, I guess I’ll become Mr. Veto. I am not going to let them through” Trump said to the New York Post during ‘Pod Force One’ on Monday, November 2.”

He further added that this would not be the first time there will be a President who does not have the House or the Senate. “At some point, we’ll probably make deals…That’s what’s happened to me.”

Veto is the strongest power a President has: Trump

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said, “It’s the power of veto. It’s one of the stronger powers that a president has.” He added that the Democrats would send things “that are insane and I’ll veto them”. Trump also claimed that some Democrats were already reaching out to him.

He predicted that the multiple vetos would be able to bring Democrats to the table and negotiate with him when asked about a potential Democrat Congress. Earlier in September 2026, Trump also told Fox News that he would simply act as a “blocker”.

How can a Democrat-rules Congress bypass Trump’s veto?

The veto is the president’s power to reject a bill even after it has passed through both chambers of the Congress. However, Democrats might still be able to bypass the president’s veto.

The lawmakers would be required to hold an override vote to still make an act a bill despite the veto. They would require a two-thirds majority in the Senate to do so. Trump issued 10 vetoes in his first term but has only used two in his second and current term. Both of these came in 2025.

According to The Hill, the Democrats have earlier struggled to gain the two-thirds majority required to override these recent vetoes.

Several media networks have projected that the Democrats have seized control of the US Senate. They have flipped multiple Republican seats including Texas, South Caroline, Iowa, Ohio and Kansas.
