In an October 30 article titled “Melania Trump's Halloween Coat Was Its Own Kind of Costume”, The New York Times fashion director and critic Vanessa Friedman argued that the first lady had once again made a statement through her choice of coat.
Melania joined her husband on the White House South Lawn on Thursday for the annual Halloween celebration, wearing a brown coat instead of the black-and-white outfits that most people associated her with in public appearances. “The statement was in the coat,” Friedman wrote.
The White House Halloween celebration was also a talking point because of some of the costumes worn by children attending the event.
Some of the clips from the White House event got traction on social media when a boy dressed in a Soviet military uniform and a girl wearing a traditional Russian-style outfit joined trick-or-treaters and were among the children greeted by Trump and Melania.
The girl wore a costume resembling a traditional Russian “sarafan dress,” along with a headband similar to a kokoshnik, Pravda reported. The boy's outfit featured a military-style cap resembling a Soviet peaked cap bearing the USSR coat of arms.
