India has advised its nationals in France, Italy and Belgium to remain vigilant and avoid areas witnessing protests, as demonstrations over the rising cost of living have intensified across parts of Europe, PTI reported.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday that Indian missions in the three countries were closely monitoring developments and maintaining regular contact with members of the Indian community, according to the report.

“Our embassies in France and Italy have also issued advisories for our nationals, which they must follow. On our part, we remain committed to the welfare and safety of all our nationals abroad,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

The advisory comes amid large-scale demonstrations in several European countries, including France and Italy. Protests in France turned violent last week, with reports of arson, vandalism and damage to public property and shops.

Responding to a question about the safety of Indian nationals in countries affected by the unrest, Jaiswal said they had been advised to exercise caution while venturing out, avoid areas where demonstrations were taking place and follow advisories issued by local authorities.

The Indian missions are keeping a close watch on the situation and remain in touch with the Indian community, he added.

On Thursday, thousands of protesters took to the streets of Paris following a weekend of clashes and widespread looting that marked some of the country’s most violent unrest in years.

Media reports also said protesters had set fire to a historic town hall in Limoges, a city in central France, amid the unrest.

India said the safety and welfare of its nationals abroad remained a priority as the situation continued to be monitored.
