PTIRath, the mother of Chandranath Rath, the slain personal assistant of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, secured 1,64,427 votes in the politically significant constituency in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district. Pradhan received 41,674 votes.
All other candidates, including those fielded by the Left Front, the Indian Secular Front (ISF) and the rebel Trinamool Congress faction, Democratic Trinamool Congress, forfeited their deposits. CPI candidate Santi Gopal Giri finished third with 5,779 votes.
The result reinforces the BJP's electoral position in Nandigram, a constituency that has remained central to West Bengal's political landscape since the anti-land acquisition movement helped bring the Trinamool Congress to power in 2011.
Counting began at 8 am amid tight security at the centres. The bypolls, held on Tuesday, are being watched as an early electoral test of West Bengal's political landscape following the BJP's victory in the Assembly elections earlier this year.
The Nandigram seat in Medinipur fell vacant after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who won both Nandigram and Bhabanipur, retained the latter. He defeated former CM Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur.
BJP's candidate Shankharavh Sarkar unexpectedly won in Muslim-majority Rejinagar in Murshidabad district, with a lead of more than 75,816 votes over his nearest rival, Golam Nabi Azad of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), after the fifteenth round of counting.
Sarkar polled 1,29,914 votes, while Azad secured 54,098 votes.
According to figures released by the Election Commission on its website, Congress’ Abdullahil Kafi sat in the third position with 6,168 votes, while Mamata All India Trinamool Congress candidate Rabiul Alam Chowdhury slid to the fourth spot with 3,847 votes.
