A private jet crashed on Sunday just nine miles from Mar-a-Lago, resort owned by US President Donald Trump. This comes at a time when President Trump is scheduled to address Republican rally in Iowa with barely just a few hours left for US midterm elections. US transportation secretary said that nine people has been killed in the plane crash.

A small Learjet crashed into a southern Florida neighborhood Sunday killing all nine people aboard, US officials said, noting the aircraft departed from Austin, Texas and was bound for the Bahamas. "Today's plane crash in Palm Beach County, Florida is a horrific tragedy," Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement, referring to the same county where President Donald Trump's resort home of Mar-a-Lago is located.

The Learjet 60 was carrying nine people when it crashed in a residential area in Florida's Palm Beach County erupting in a massive fireball, federal officials said. The Bahamas-bound jet departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

It was unclear if anyone on the ground was hurt.

Video of the crash showed the aircraft nose-diving from the sky and then erupting into a giant ball of flames near a major roadway, only inches from passing vehicles. The crash left a giant crater in the pavement with flames leaping up from it near a utility pole.

Chunks of pavement are seen in the footage engulfed in fire as people milled about, expressing shock it landed only feet from homes. Black smoke billowed out of the hole, wafting past palm trees swaying on the stormy day.

Jim Reynolds, a spokesperson for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, said it was a private aircraft. He could not immediately provide details about who was on the flight. He said the tail number for the flight was N722BD.

The crash occurred near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office closed roads in both directions and urged motorists to avoid the area. Firefighters and other emergency personnel rushed to the scene.

A woman working nearby said electricity in the area had been out for approximately two hours following the crash. The circumstances of the crash remained under investigation.
