The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday signed a Rs 661.50 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited for the procurement of BrahMos Fire Control Systems and launchers for Indian Navy ships.

The contract was signed under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The BrahMos systems will be fitted onboard frontline Indian Navy warships. The BrahMos weapon system is the Navy’s primary surface-to-surface missile system for maritime strike operations.

The system can engage both land and sea targets at extended ranges and at supersonic speeds, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The contract has a minimum indigenous content of 68%, with the project expected to increase participation from Indian industries, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The project is also expected to generate employment over a period of three years, the ministry said.

The ministry said the procurement would strengthen India’s maritime security architecture and defence capabilities while supporting the indigenisation of advanced military technology.

The contract is part of the government’s push to increase domestic procurement and reduce dependence on imports for defence equipment.
