New Delhi: India and Poland are focused on ramping up ties, including in the areas of defence and space, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised support for every meaningful effort towards peace in Ukraine and West Asia during a bilateral meeting with his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk.

The two leaders discussed enhancing trade, deepening defence industry cooperation and initiating reforms at the United Nations, among other issues, during Tusk's state visit. "Both India and Poland believe in democratic values and the rule of law. We believe that reform is necessary to make global governance institutions more robust and effective. Be it Ukraine or West Asia, India will continue to support every meaningful effort towards peace," PM Modi said.

A joint statement issued after the meeting noted that the two leaders expressed deep concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine, including its tragic humanitarian consequences. "They reiterated the need for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in line with international law, consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity," it stated. The statement also noted the adverse impact of the war on global food and energy security, particularly in the Global South.
