    The Indian stock market will remain shut on Friday on account of Gandhi Jayanti.

    Indian equity markets will remain closed on Friday, October 2, on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. The BSE and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will not conduct trading during the day, with activity set to resume next week now.

    The regular trading session for Indian equities runs from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm, while the pre-open session begins at 9:00 am. The NSE and BSE remain shut on Saturdays and Sundays, in addition to exchange-declared trading holidays.

    Trading on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will also remain suspended in both sessions on October 2, according to information available on the exchange’s website. The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will remain closed for the full trading day.

    Upcoming stock market holidays in 2026

    The Indian stock market has 16 scheduled trading holidays in 2026, of which 11 have already passed. With Gandhi Jayanti marking the October 2 closure, the remaining market holidays for the year are:

    October 20: Dussehra

    November 10: Diwali-Balipratipada

    November 24: Guru Nanak Jayanti

    December 25: Christmas

    Gandhi Jayanti 2026

    October 2, 2026, marks the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who played a central role in India’s freedom movement and advocated non-violence as a means of political and social change.

    The occasion is observed across India with prayer meetings, tributes and commemorative events.

    Gandhi Jayanti commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to the freedom movement and his advocacy of non-violence.

    The day is also observed globally as the International Day of Non-Violence. The United Nations designated October 2 for the observance in recognition of Gandhi’s philosophy and legacy of non-violence.




    Stock Market Recap: Sensex, Nifty Extend Losses

    Indian equity benchmarks extended their losing streak in Thursday’s session, with selling pressure intensifying amid a mix of global and domestic macroeconomic concerns.

    Rising bond yields and elevated crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment, adding to concerns over the economic outlook for 2026-27.

    The Nifty 50 fell 198.50 points, or 0.88%, to 22,421.95, while the BSE Sensex declined 570.59 points, or 0.79%, to 71,909.70.

    The sell-off extended beyond large-cap stocks. The Nifty Smallcap 100 slipped 0.97%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 declined 1.01%, indicating broad-based weakness across market segments.

    Volatility also picked up, with the India VIX rising 7.04% to 14.44.

    Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Auto index emerged as the biggest laggard, falling more than 3%. The Nifty Metal, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Consumer Durables indices each declined by around 2%.

    Market breadth remained decisively negative. Of the 3,707 stocks traded on the NSE, 2,574 closed lower, while 1,023 advanced and 110 remained unchanged.
