    Stock Market Holiday: Are BSE, NSE open or closed for Gandhi Jayanti tomorrow? Check upcoming market holidays

    Synopsis

    The Indian stock market will remain closed on October 2 for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, with the BSE and NSE shutting trading. MCX and NCDEX will also remain closed. Investors can check the remaining 2026 market holidays, including Dussehra, Diwali-Balipratipada, Guru Nanak Jayanti and Christmas, ahead of the upcoming trading sessions.

    The Indian stock market will remain closed tomorrow, October 2, on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. Both the BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain shut for trading.

    In the commodity segment, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), the country’s largest commodity exchange, will remain closed for both trading sessions tomorrow, according to its website. The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will also remain shut for the entire day.

    Upcoming market holidays

    In total, 16 stock market holidays were scheduled for 2026, of which 11 have already passed. April saw two holidays — April 3 (Good Friday) and April 14 (Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti). Markets were also closed on May 1 on account of Maharashtra Day and May 28 for Bakri Id. The BSE and NSE were then shut on June 26 for Muharram and September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi.

    The BSE and NSE will be closed tomorrow for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, followed by October 20 (Dussehra), November 10 (Diwali-Balipratipada), November 24 (Guru Nanak Jayanti), and December 25 (Christmas).

    Gandhi Jayanti 2026

    Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on October 2 to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who played a central role in India’s freedom movement and advocated non-violence as a means of political and social change.

    The day became a national holiday after India’s independence and is marked by prayer meetings, tributes and commemorative programmes across the country. The United Nations also observes October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence, recognising Gandhi’s philosophy and its wider influence.

    The 2026 observance marks Gandhi’s 157th birth anniversary.
