BIG FM has applied to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) for permission to launch six additional news channels, as it steps up its expansion in the news broadcasting space following the acquisition of Sapphire Media’s existing news business, including India Daily 24x7.

The proposed expansion is part of the company’s plans to build a national news network under BIG News Network, combining traditional broadcasting with digital platforms to reach audiences across regions and languages.

The proposed channels will focus on timely and accurate reporting, hyperlocal and vernacular news, regional perspectives and short-form content tailored for digital consumption. The company aims to strengthen its presence in regional markets while building a broader news network with a digital-first approach.

The company intends to bring these businesses together to expand its reach across platforms and markets.

Commenting on the development, Ashit Kukian, CEO of BIG FM, said the company sees an opportunity to expand its news broadcasting business by combining its existing capabilities with new digital-first formats.

“As audience preferences evolve, our focus is on making news more accessible, relevant and engaging across platforms, languages and regional markets. This expansion is an important step in growing our news business and strengthening its role within the broader ONE BIG WORLD ecosystem,” Kukian said.
